Kraiburg TPE launches new Thermolast K compound

HC Plastics News: This year, KraiburgTPE introduced the new ThermolastK compound, which is mainly used in automotive applications such as EPDM window coverings and sealing profiles, molded TPE corner joints and end components.

In addition, a series of new thermoplastic elastomers have been introduced, specifically developed for the use of ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) in two-component applications to highlight the excellent adhesion and UV resistance of TPE.

The automotive industry is the largest and fastest growing market for thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). New applications for automotive door and window seals require dimensionally stable corner joints and end elements. Styrene-butadiene compounds (SBC) and crosslinked thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV) have been realized. However, the cost-effectiveness of TPV is limited, especially for window coverings, because of various factors in the manufacturing process. The EPDM bonding series from Kraiburg TPE is a good alternative with high added value.

The new TPE series combines excellent weatherability and adhesion with extruded and foamed EPDM profiles.

The end element core requirements for corner joints and window trims include excellent adhesion and weatherability, which is ensured by the long-term process stability of the TPE/rubber joint. In order to reduce the cooling and circulation time of the two component elements, the injection temperature of the lowest TPE solution is also required.

The AD/EPDM/UV series meets all of these requirements by combining optimum adhesion and UV-resistant durability with a thermal effect of 70 Shore A. These special TPE products exhibit excellent stability compared to other materials. The EPDM profile is neither compressed nor destroyed or deformed. The compound has uniform color fastness to EPDM and has no tendency to stick or phase separate. Kraiburg TPE has tested the suitability of new materials for comprehensive adhesion, outdoor exposure and heat aging tests. And the processing performance and stability are optimized in close cooperation with machine tools and mold manufacturers. Tests have shown that the EDM rubber contact surface and TPE cleanliness are critical in these two component elements, and freshly cut sealing profiles provide optimum adhesion.

AD/EPDM/UV technology has been tested by several customers in the automotive industry.
